February 1, 1909.
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
7:30 to 8:30 A.M. Moderate temperature; S wind.
Along the seawall there were three or four
large flocks of ducks, mostly scoters, on the
water; one flock arose as the train passed.
Along the shore were few ducks. One or two
Scamp ducks were recognized.
On the bay I saw two flocks of ducks of
about 30 each flying south high in the air.
Larus glaucescens and Larus californicus followed
the steamer in the usual proportions.
This evening about 5:45 I saw a few
gulls about the San Francisco ferry slips
although it was nearly dark; one or two
were also seen when crossing the bay.
February 2, 1909.
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
7:30 to 8:30 A.M. Moderate temperature; strong south
wind.
Along the seawall there were very three
or four good-sized flocks of ducks on the
water. Few ducks were seen along the mole.
I saw a young Larus californicus here.
On the bay Larus glaucescens and Larus
californicus followed the steamer as usual. I saw a
flock of gulls floating over a passing ferry boat
without moving their wings or changing their positions
