mole and seawall. I saw two loons on the water.
While going down the mole, I saw 1 gull and 1
small land bird flying east over the water.
On the bay Larus glaucaceus and Larus
caifornicus followed the steamer as usual.
5 to 5:30 P.M. Conditions about the same.
A good many Larus glaucaceus and occasional
Larus californicus were about the bow of the boat
while in the ship on the San Francisco side.
An immature one of the former stood for quite
a while on the deck. I saw a young Larus
californicus standing on a pile with several
young Larus glaucaceus. I saw two adult
gulls which appeared to be Larus argentatus.
Along the mole I noticed a number
of ducks on the water, some individuals
being quite close, but in the gathering dusk
it was impossible to distinguish the species.
January 29, 1909.
Alameda to San Francisco, California.
7:30 to 8:30 A.M.
It being foggy this morning, I saw no ducks
along the seawall and only five along the
mole, one, a Scarp Duck, that close enough
to be easily distinguished. I saw a small
grebe close to the end of the mole.
On the bay a good number of Larus
glaucaceus and one or two Larus californicus
