Oct. 19, 1908.
This evening I noted one or two Larus heermanni
on the bay, and quite a number of Larus californicus,
some of which were immature; the adults of this
latter species now have speckled heads. Most
of the gulls were on the west side of the bay.
A few were seen flying westward, singly.
On the east side of the bay, three ducks passed
at a distance westward bound and fairly high in
the air. A flock of about twenty-five passed
to the south high in the air.
In a slough near the roundhouse I saw an Ardea
herodias. Nothing in sight, the tide being high.
Oct. 21, 1908.
This morning there was a strong north wind blowing. Along
the mole I saw several Larus californicus flying. A num-
ber were also seen on the bay. On the bay I saw a
cormorant flying to windward. Two or three flocks
of ducks, apparently scoters, were seen flying over the
bay in various directions, high and low. An
Odemix perpicillata passed close by the steamer.
Oct. 23, 1908.
This morning I saw a flock of about twenty-five
ducks on the water off the mole. A small grebe was
also seen.
Oct. 24, 1908.
This evening at dusk I saw ten Ardea herodias in the
Shallow water beside the mole - low tide.
