Jan. 13, 1908.
Alameda to San Francisco, Cal.
Conditions:- Moderate temperature; overcast; no wind; 7:40 to
8:25 A.M., high tide.
Two or three large flocks of ducks were on the water
south of the mole. An occasional gull, duck, and
small grebe were seen in quite close.
On the bay Larus californicus and Larus glau-
cescens were abundant and followed the boat as
usual. The former species was seen on the hurri-
cane decks and flagstaffs.
When just east of Goat Island I saw a string of
a dozen or so cormorants flying northwest close to
the water. Two others were seen going in the same di-
rection nearer the mole.
San Francisco to Alameda, Cal.
Conditions:- Raining; south wind; moderate temperature;
4:45 to 5:05 P.M.
Larus glaucescens and Larus californicus
followed the steamer fairly common, many sailing
over the stern, and one Larus californicus, imma-
ture, riding on one of the after flagstaffs.
I saw a duck close into the rocks of the mole
this evening. It was too dark to see far out on the
water.
Jan. 14, 1908.
During the trip to San Francisco this morning a strong westerly
wind was blowing, causing the gulls to fly faster than usual. Many
followed the steamer (mostly Larus glaucescens), crossing and recrossing
our stem. Light-headed brownish plumaged young Larus glaucescens occasional.
