144. Alameda to San Francisco, bal. Conditions: - cool; clear; no wind to speak of. Yesterday morning it was stormy. While Larus glaucescens follow the boat abundantly. When a ferry boat passes it is usually surrounded by great numbers of these birds flying over it and on all sides of it, often sailing over it with motionless wings. The usual ducks and grebes and an occasional cormorant were seen along the Mole, also an occasional gull. One cor- morant was seen on the water yesterday morning close to the ferry slip on the San Francisco side. A few Larus californicus, mostly adults, are seen, chiefly on the San Francisco side. Yesterday morning I saw one standing on the roof of a shed among a number of Larus glaucescens. This evening and yesterday evening a few were seen flying westward over the city south of California Street. On the bay at about 5:00 P.M. nowadays they are not common. Dec. 21, 1907. This afternoon while coming down Market Street, San Francisco, I saw a few gulls flying oceanward over the city. They seem to come from north of the Ferry Building and fly about parallel to Market Street.
