Alameda to San Francisco, cal;
Conditions: - Overcast; moderate temperature; 8:00 A.M.
Only one or two gulls followed the steamer
while east of Goat Island this morning. Something was thrown overboard, however, and a
number swooped for it with shrill cries. After
that quite a number followed, viz.: Larus
glaucescens, and Larus californicus. On the
piles and the roofs of the sheds in front of the
Ferry Building there were a good (many gulls)
chiefly the former species.
Along the mole drawn a few ducks and
small grebes at a distance on the water, also
a flock of ducks at a distance, flying. Just as
the steamer was leaving the mole a Cormorant
passed over us flying Northward.
During the past two or three weeks one
or two loons have been seen in the bay, flying
northward.
