Aix galericulata.
double bars on the shoulders have appeared again. Dark
wine-red feathers are taking the place of the striped
feathers on the [illegible] part of the neck, those on the
higher up, apparently being last to go. He has
[illegible] all the colors down the center of his head,
and the white on each side is now very
distinct. The red whiskers are beginning to ap-
pear. The lower neck just below the head is
destitute of feathers (except down).
October 3, 1909.
The drake has attained his full coloring now,
including wing fans, although the feathers have
not attained their full length growth. Two
of the females are [illegible] patches of feathers
on the sides of their heads and necks just as
the drake did.
November 7, 1909.
The females have been doing considerable calling.
They are also quite quarrelsome. "Williams" mate
is very jealous of the other two ducks. All four
are quite pugnacious now, and chase some
of the other ducks about. "William" is very
[illegible] and "trumpets" about in grand style,
throwing his head a way back when "showing
off" and "spitting".
