Aug. 12, 1907.
Alameda to and from San Francisco, Cal.
Conditions: - Moderate temperature; west wind; clear.
On the great stretch of sand exposed by the
outgoing tide near the mole were a few large
shore birds close to the marsh while on the outer
stretches of sand and on the sandspits were
a couple of hundred or so gulls, all too far
from the train to be identified. A tern was noted
diving near by, Tyro Ardea herodias in water up to tibiae.
On the way in the morning occasional
gulls were seen, Larus occidentalis, Larus heer-
manni, and one or two lighter-backed gulls
probably Larus californicus or L. delawarensis.
I noted a Larus heermanni dropped hurriedly to the water to pick up something; it
remained there for a moment with wings
outspread and uplifted.
