AEP galericulata. Mating. March 18, 1909. During the past three weeks or month the pair of Mandarin Ducks have been seen copulating three times, doing this in the pond; the female being almost submerged. Very often when both birds are in the pond I have observed the female stretch her neck out flat in the water, and it now occurs to me that this was very likely an invitation to the male. The drake now seems very proud of his fine plumage, showing off a good deal. He delights in sitting on the edge of the pond, sticking his bill in the water and apparently making a swift discharge of air through it, at the same time erecting his crest. He also very often sticks his bill in the water, and then sticks it quickly under one wing from above, making the same sound, apparently caused by the quick expulsion of air. The crest is also raised at this time. He also whistles when on the ground — another way, merely standing very erect and pressing his bill against his neck, erecting his crest at the same time.
