Aug. 13, 1904.
Alameda to San Francisco, bal.
Conditions: - 7:00 A. M. to 8:00 A. M. clear; warm; west wind.
I noted a few Passer domesticus and barpodaucus
mexicanus in the back yard. Near the station saw an
Strindo erythrogastis on a telegraph wire.
In the slough near the roundhouse and along the mole
saw a few shore birds. Along the mole there were many gulls
and a few Ardea herodias. I distinguished Larus occidentalis
and Larus californicus. As the train passes these birds often
take to wing, but usually they make a ridiculous attempt at
running; usually going along partly sideways, carrying with
them whatever they may be trying to devour.
North of Oakland Creek, there were only a few gulls—
that is down near the light house.
On the bay I noted a few Larus occidentalis and Larus
heermannii.
San Francisco to Alameda, bal.
Conditions: - 5:15 P. M. to 6:00 P. M. clear; warm; west wind.
Mr. Loomis and I observed a few Larus occidentalis and
Larus californicus during the trip across. The latter
were on the water off Goat Island.
North of Oakland Creek there were many gulls,
both near the light house and the freight slip.
On the south side of the mole near the roundhouse, there
were a good many gulls — Larus occidentalis identified.
As the train passed along the marsh, an owl; probably
Asio accipitrinus flew by.
The following birds were all prepared by me previous
