Conditions: Overcast; good breeze blowing; temperature -
bout 50° F.
After leaving the ferry slip the first bird which
greeted my eye was Larus heermanni. The few of them
which were flying about, appeared to pay no attention
whatever to the steamer, but circled gracefully
about apparently in search of food.
As we neared the United States Army transport
Logan, I saw a large flock of Larus occidentalis and
Larus heermanni; some flying, some sitting on the
water; all evidently engaged in getting food. Larus
heermanni predominated.
As the boat was right off Goat (Yerba
Buena) Island, a murrel (Uria troile) came flying
