Nettium formosum. Duck. Obtained January 1, 1912.
January 14, 1912.
Seems to be in perfect feather.
February 11, 1912.
Looks about the same as a month ago, but is evidently
moulting as all the others seem to be doing. From the feathers
in the pond, the breast feathers seem to be the chief ones lost.
I found a scapular this morning that undoubtedly belonged to
this bird. Looking at all three of the females of the three
species now on hand, they appear to be in fairly fresh
plumage and not moulting. This last is not the case, for
evidently a limited prenuptial moult is in progress.
March 10, 1912.
Seems to be in perfect feather. I note that all the
ducks pick at their feathers a whole lot lies than they
did a month ago.
April 7, 1912.
Aside from wear, there seems to be no change.
May 5, 1912.
Aside from wear, there seems to be no change. As a rule
the female carries her head close to her shoulders also.
When excited or alarmed, but the male & female raise their
heads stretching their necks to the full length, then they appear less
round.
