July 1941
At dusk each evening J.T.A. heard a Horned Owl hooting
in the distance. A family of quail - about 8 y.g. - Loudsberg.
Spotted Towhees off Dancing - second brood.
July 21. We drove to Santa Cruz where we patrolled
the shore 11:30 - 12:30. At Guilelmot Pt. - Two
pairs of Guillemots were carrying food to two
holes in the cliff. We watched Band Swallows
as they entered holes in the earth above the rocky
part of the cliff. And Cliff Swallows were going
to the nests they have built on the cliff.
Heermann Gulls were numerous along the
beaches - about half with white heads.
Three large Loons (Common?) were asleep on
the bay. Brandt Cormorants were on the rocks.
A group of five or six gaster birds flew
across a cove and alighted on some rocks
but they were too far away for satisfactory
identification.
July 22-23. The cherry plums are ripe on the tree next
to the garage. I have noticed Cal. Jays, a Rob. Thrush,
Vireos, Tits and a Grosbeak near the tree.
The W. Flycatcher is feeding young - flying in
and out of the garage frequently. For July 23.
July 25: Cool. Both parents are feeding the young flycatcher.
The male is perceptibly larger than the female and
was afraid to go to the nest while I was sitting in
the car in the garage. The female went without
hesitation as she has been sitting without being
disturbed when we went in and out; also when
we drove the car in and out.
