B. Crisles were abundant and building nests -
Layuli Buntings and Yellow Warblers in full
song and a Chat sang a few phrases -
Black Phoebes - a family came out from
under the bridge. Linnets & Mr. Goldfinches
ab. Violet, green and Rough-winged Swallows seen.
In all we saw 40 species. Sp. Hanks
and Killdeer. Morning Doves ab.
(Mrs. Learns reported a G-C Sparrow at her table May 12.)
May 15: PB. Thrush sang continuously at dawn
under my window. In the afternoon
we drove down to Boulder Creek (Thursday) to
stay until Sunday.
May 16. Boulder Creek. A perfect summer day.
Breakfast outdoors at 7:30; Wee work in the
garden all the morning. In the afternoon we
went to Santa Cruz (forgot to take my musculars)
At Guillest Point I found no gulllets, but
the usual colony of Cliff Swallows had finished
their nests plastered and against the rocky
cliff and across from them in the eastern
bank (above the rock) was a colony of Bank
Swallows with nests in holes up under the
overhanging mesembrion thermom. Three
Heron Gulls flew over the waves
and three Common Loons in full plumage
were inside the bay. One Loon beyond the
lighthouse may have been a Common
but showed no markings on the back.
One full plumaged Scoter looked liked the
American with a lighter colored bill.
Brown Pelicans and Cormorants abundant.
