1941 Desert Trip
in the bars and near the mountains as
we turned back toward Victorville and
took the road that crosses & Kramer. At
Adelanto there were acres of Phelia Tucidos.
We saw a large flock of Vultures moving
steadily northward and a flock of Swallows
going steadily southward. Desert Candles
were abundant about 20 miles north of
Adelanto. Six Ring-tailed Sulls resting in pool near
Adelanto. A raven was seen near Tehachapi.
Very threatening over the Tehachapi but
no rain until we reached Bakersfield.
We got under cover at Motil Dino just
as the storm broke - heavy rains and
high winds.
Apr. 5. Clear. We drove west and north
by way of Shepster, Wasco, Lost Hills -
Coalinga, Helm to Madiera. Wild
flowers covered the slopes north and
south of Coalinga. Flocks of Savannah
Sparrows near Bakersfield and northward.
Dark Sparrows near Wasco, 2 p.m.
Mocking birds near Wasco - Am. Egrets -
many flocks of Brewer Blackbirds flying
northward (500). Horned Larks, Pipits,
Redwings, Killdeer, Linnets, Shrikes, Meadow
Larks. 1 Raven & of Coalinga. A Marsh
Hawk was circling in the wind, flying
straight up, then dropping down. Adult
gray plumage. Mourning Doves.
a few W. Thigh birds - Flocks of small finches -
We lunched at a bridge over a canal
south of Helm where 3 or 4 Lim Barren
