1942
Dec. 27, 1942. Typical winter day - light fog, 6 p.m. report.
I heard a W.W. Warbler calling below the East Porch.
When I put out food 3 Fox Sparrows, 1 Song sp.
and two Spotted Towhees came. Later a Hermit
Thrush (a pomegranate is for him - oatmeal
for others). Walked down to 72 Pano-
ravia where I noticed six Bluebirds on
the electric wires. When they flew they went
across the mouth of the canyon but must
have settled nearby for I could still hear
them as I walked home. Heard also 1 Rc. King
a few Siskins and Purple Finches and saw
two Calif. Jays. Did not detect any V. Thrush.
Dec. 28. Rained all day.
Dec. 29. Clear. Drove to Boulder Creek. It became
more cloudy as we went on. At Alvarado Pools
there was a dense ground fog so I could see only
a very short distance. Saw two Yellow Legs (Greats)
an Am. Egret and a Great Blue Heron Blackbirds,
mainly Ridings were everywhere and very noisy.
Meadowlarks were singing in all suitable places.
Near the junction of the Milpitas-Alvies Rd. and the
road to San Jose, I saw a Short-eared Owl perched
on a large terra cotta pipe near a house very near
the road. He seemed to watch us. We stopped long
enough for me to make a sketch.
