1942 Dec. 5. Clear, cold. At least a Fox Sparrow is coming to the Table for food. I seldom see Towhees or song Sparrows near the Table and, much of the time there isn't a bird to be heard anywhere on the place. Then suddenly many birds appear, especially Fox Sparrows at dusk. Today the Varied Thrushes were eating the Logan berries under the window by my deck. Saw four in the bush at once. Dec. 10 "Birds in Retrospect" - at Aud. Assoc. At feeding table - 5 Fox Sp., 1 Song Sp., Crested Jay. The first day the dish has been emptied before night. Some large mammal cleans it out every night. Dec. 11. Trule Fog. A W.W. Wren greeted me when I put out food at 9 a.m. - (wartime). A Hermit Thrush came immediately and perched on the apple. I saw under the front dining room window a Fox Sparrow with a spotty white collar and white rump patch. Lois and Miss Bladding reported many pipits on the grass near entrance to campus (Center St.) Dec. 16. "Birds in Retrospect" at W.F.C. for Lady Birds, Alumni, Numbers and Faculty Group. Dec. 20-23. A few birds come to feed - Fox Sparrows 4-5; 5 spotted Towhees, H. Thrush, Animal (Aporosum?) takes everything left at night. Dec. 23. A large flock of Birds flew west through tree tops. J. Th. W.W.
