1942.
Nov. 24. In a misty cloud all the morning. Clearing
in afternoon. Nov. 27. Clouds and rain.
Nov. 28. In a cloud but we started to Boulder Creek.
At Los Gates it was quite warm and sunny -
At Boulder Creek the air was very soft and
warm - things very wet. No frost at night.
I was busy pruning roses most of the afternoon.
Once when I looked up there were three
large hawks circling above me - Saw later
two flocks of Bandtails - 20-25 each.
Varied Thrushes very abundant. Virgin Vireo heard
Sycophantes.
Nov. 29. Beautiful rosy Sunrise. Warm. As we ate
our lunch in front of the fireplace we saw
(at the same time), juncos, Brown and Spotted
Towhees feeding on oatmeal on the mosaic; a
Ruby-cx Knight in the nearest oak tree, and
three Varied Thrushes in the front flower bed or
path. On the way home we ran into
clouds on the summit of the Los Gates Road
and it was misty or raining much of the way
to Berkeley.
Nov. 30. "Allen Hummers" spent morning west of the
Life Sciences Building on Strawberry Creek
where there were many Varied Thrushes -
Also ab. And. Warblers, R.c Knights (several in
our small tree, sometimes a fight), juncos.
Mittall Sparrows all over the lawns -
some singing. Saw also Townsend Warblers,
Y-c Sparrows (a few), Purpl'd Sparrows (many)
Dec. 2. Half an hour in same place. Varied Thrushes
picked up bay berries under the bay trees
14 Patton Vireos, very near; eyering incomplete.
