Aug. 27. Wrote to Palo Alto - noticed Chickadees on
Campus. Tilmouse at Alta. Ret. to Boulder Crt.
Aug. 28. Went to Santa Cruz Big Trees - everything
in excellent condition - really a gem. The
system of excluding campers and picnickers
from the grove and railing in the trails results
in a continuous ground cover of green. No
fallen trees. Noticed Gymn Nuttallatus, Creepers.
Aug. 29. Returned to Berkeley. Clearer, warmer. Near
the little patches just north of Milpitas a
Bittern was flying. It looked very large
and brown and held its head heron fashion:
Warmer in Berkeley than last week but fog
came in at night. I noticed Yellow Warblers
in the shade trees on Dwight Way.
Aug. 30. Heard the "Mee-eez mee-ee" of a Nuttall
Unio. A Lutescent came to the East pool
to bathe - heard one singing later.
Virginia Wrens singing the twittering song of
fall (trills of year) - also a typical song.
Thrush called over and over at dawn. Thrasher
notes suggested a family - very early a.m.
Still no quail near house.
Sept. 1. Cold fog all day.
Sept. 3. "" Birds mig. Grusheaf. Lut.W.
Sept. 4. "" "" Pil. Warbler. Fog.
Went to Boulder Creek in afternoon. Left fog at
Alvarado. Saw a Bittern in Tules at Milpitas.
Sept. 5. Boulder Creek, Clear, warm. Two Water
Angels were on the river below the Cottage; one
sang frequently. Sept. 6. Angels again. Brown Tow-
