1942 berries - red on head very faint. Otherwise in full color. Linnets 12-15 - eating elder berries. Several Purple Finches also. In the afternoon I climbed to the Fisico trail and walked part way down but could not see over the trees to see the hawk. I heard it only once - on the way back when I was opposite the Hoyt place. Two Redtails were rising in circles - one with red tail, the other very pale. At the top both sailed eastward over the hills. Two Siskiins - calls of q.q. - flew over. Linnets and Purple Finches most conspicuous birds - Elder berries ripe; some copper berries, abundance of seeds - Aug. 23. Wren: tit sang, female responded. Heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch calling across Woodland Rd. Foggy all day. Aug. 24. Foggy all day. Aug. 24. Went to Boulder Creek. Between Alvarado and Centerville I saw a Bittern flying, near a water channel. The fog reached almost to Mission Peak; then clear to the rim of the Santa Cruz Mt's where we met the ocean fog from Monterey Bay. It was not sunny again until we reached Boulder Creek about 2 p.m. Aug. 25. Cool but clear. Went to Big Basin in the afternoon - many fallen trees, dusty. Heard many Pygmy Nuthatches. Aug. 26. A family of Brown Thrushes, young grown but fed by parents at feeding table. Many Juncos come for food - young feeding themselves. Spot- led Thrushes - adults only.
