1942 Probably Cinnamon Teal. July 26. Alvarado. St. Blue Heron and 10-12 Mallards (2) in water channel. 1'pr. of Barn Swallows came to bridge Calling, answers from nest. Other Cliff Swallows & Barns Swallows over fields. Several Mockers were seen in Santa Clara Valley. Berkely July 27-31 - Foggy - perhaps sunny in afternoons. July 31. W. Flycatcher family still together. Sp. Towhee still sings near nest site. Family of young brush tits in garden. Goldfinches and Linnets fly over in (family) groups. No thrasher heard. I have heard no quails from our house all summer. Often see a large family above the Stadium on north side. Young 2/3 grown. Aug. 3. Warm summer day. A flicker called near the house (has not been within hearing during the past two months) - also near Greek Theater. Aug. 4. A bird came in through my window and was found in the upper hall at 7:45 a.m. I closed all the doors and opened the windows. At 8:30 I went up and saw no bird so I started to close the windows. A snake under my feet - the bird was behind the dresser. It came up on to the dresser and then flew out of the window. I think it may have been a young Purple Finch - tail forked, no central spot, smooth streaks on breast. A Purple Finch was singing outside - after two weeks of silence.
