1941 Desert Trip
On the rolling hills before we entered the canyon
there were many Horned Larks. At a bridge
over a stream And. Warblers, Bluebird Phoebes,
Cliff Swallows, Linnets. Spanish Warties on
the wires and Meadowlarks singing.
In the canyon, on the steep slopes across
the river from the roadway were carpets
of blue lupine - At one stop we saw Rock
Wrens, Bullock Orioles, W. Kingbirds (which
dropped to the surface of the water - to
pick up insects ?), Chipping Sparrow,
W. Swatcatchers, Titlions, Siskins, W. Blue
Brids, Turkey Buzzard, Spotted Towhee and
Canyon Wren were heard. Later we heard
the Littercut Warbler, saw Calif. Jay, Robin,
Virgin Wren, Brown Towhee, Flicker .
At Bodfish we drove through a grassy
meadow. At Weldon we began to see
Ravens - the size of Turkey Buzzard, wedge-
shaped tails - Several together. We lunched
in a little pocket in the hills where tin
desert peach was in bloom. Several robins
flew in. Gambel Sparrows were singing -
Redwings, Meadowlarks, a pair of Mallards seen-
Between there and Walker Pass - We stopped
near a stream where I saw Brush Tits that
and white-puffed underneath (Lead-colored?) -
I walked among the Joshua trees on the eastern
slope but found nothing. After we turned
north at the east end of the pass, we
saw more ravens - At Little Lake: 2 Cinnamon
Teal (pr.?), 8-10 Buffleheads (2003 juveniles).
