1942- Berkeley. May 8. Russet-backed Thrush whistling under my window at dawn. Not heard during day. May 9. A family of brush tits in front garden. Chilly May 9. Foggy morning. Chilly wind. Birds nesting near house: Screech Owls in flickerbox. Virgin Warbler in lower box part. W. Flycatcher Mouse meet: [illegible] on front beam in garage. Judge from constant singing that a pair of Lutes cut Warblers, a pair of Spotted Tanagers and a pair of Pileated Warblers are nesting near our east line. Also a pair of Song Sparrows at top rear road. Within hearing: Olive Warblers. Occasional songs: Grosbeak, Purple Finch, Unusual for this year - a Thrasher called Twice near east pool in early morning. May 10. Faint whistle of R. Thrush Twice, Junco near garage. Rain all night. May 11. We went via Santa Fe to Los Angeles. Cloudy with some rain. When the clouds lifted, the mountains were covered with snow down to the foothills - It was chilly every- where, esp. cold in Tejon Pass when we stopped at Lebec. Reached Hollywood before 6 p.m. Clear and warmer there. May 12. Wakened by Mockingbird. We drove out to Balos Verdes where we spent the day (Golden Wedding). Clear, cool. May 13. Spent the day seeing relatives and friends. Clear, cool. May 14. Went to Balos Verdes again, returning by bus which went along the shore in some places. (see list following)
