a few feet of the jay. Three times the hummer repeated his performance but the jay remained
on his perch. Then the hummer called from
another perch. After a few minutes, when
I passed the tree the jay flew out. When
I returned (perhaps three minutes later) the
hummer was back again on his perch.
Feb. 28. Alvarado Ponds: Coots, Pintails, Spoon-
bills very ab., Walleets, St. Flover numerous.
Cheese two Yellowlegs (smaller than Willets)
Water decreasing rapidly. Frost in Berkeley
in early morning. Clear and warmer in
later part of day (Boulder Creek)
Feb. Mar. 1. Cold last night with frost (Boulder C.)
Warm and very balmy later. Hutton Vireos,
Varied Thrush, Siskiyou, juncos, Chickadees,
Bushtits, etc.
Mar. 3. Berkeley. Warm. Lutescent Warbler
was singing during the morning east of
our house. Also Thrasher, R-c. Knight,
Purple Finch, Song Sparrow, Virginia Wren -
Mar. 5. Female Lutescent Warbler was clipping
in the garden; acted as if looking for a
nest site. Male singing across the road.
Two Western Winter Wrens - one near east
pool, one near west. Varied Thrush trilling.
Titmouse singing near by. Warm.
Mar. 9. A Townsend Solitaire flew up from a garden
on Panoramic Way (at Arden Rd.) to the electric
wire and then across to the Acacia Trees. Had
a good view of it through 8 x binoculars.
