Sept. 27. Clear, warm. Went to Boulder Creek via Dublin,
Sunol, Saratoga. At Sunol near the Water
Temple and elsewhere I began to see Lewis
Woodpeckers and as we crossed the valley
They seemed to be heading towards the Calaveras
Reservoir region. I wonder if they were just
coming in for the winter. I must have
seen fifteen or twenty as we drove along.
Had lunch in Boulder Creek then took this
Ramp to Swanton where she collected the
fruit etc., of Torreya californica. There
are several large trees with trunks
from 18 in. to 3 ft. thick on the McCreary
ranch. I noticed Pygmy Nuthatches calling.
As we drove back there were many
Crowned Sparrows feeding in the thistles
and arise along the road, — hundreds of
them.
Sept. 28. Boulder Creek. Beautiful fall day—no wind
Very few birds noticed; juncos came for food,
very tame. Calif. Woodpeckers heard; also
Hutton Vireo — — . On the way home
in the afternoon I saw a very long winged
large hawk near the summit of the Los Gatos
Road — body and tail lighter than long broad wings.
Near Oak Knoll a Marsh Hawk flying over
the dry hills — fall plumage — very white below,
gray above, white rump, yellow cere noticed.
Pygmyd. Sparrows were singing there — none
heard yesterday on the way down.
