Buntails, Coots, a few eared Grebes, a St. Blue
Heron and an Egret. Along the way Swallows,
Green-tailed Goldfinches, W. Bluebirds, were
often seen on the electric wires; also an
occasional Sparrow Hawk or Shrike. Many
Brewer Blackbirds, C. S. White Cranes
abundant. Calif. Woodpeckers and both Jays-
often seen. After leaving the main road
east of Sonora we saw a large group
of yellow-billed Magpies alight on the top
of a Sycamore tree. At the dam reservoir
we saw Audubon Warblers, a House Wren,
A Sharp-shinned Hawk and two Redtails.
On the water were several Eared Grebes,
three St. Blue Herons and two or three
gulls- Hills very dry.
(Oct. 23. Stopped at Mt. View marsh on our
way back from Boulder Creek. Tide was
exactly right at 3:00 p.m. Reading of
Tide table Low. 4:33 - 1.7) High 10:54 - 6.0
Cloudy with some rain. Birds were more
abundant than at any time this fall and very
near the highway. I watched one Long-billed
Curlew bathing. He was in Hotwater deep
cough to cover 2/3 of his leg. He bent forward,
Thrusting his head under water for a second
and throwing the water back over his body.
This he did over and over again, frequently
lifting one foot to scratch the feathers at the
top of his left leg. When he was thoroughly wet
