1938.
Oct. 1. We drove to Boulder Creek via Dunn-
Barlin Bridge. As we drove along I could
hear White-crowned Sparrows singing in
many fields.
When we came
to the bay we could see about 1000 White
Pelicans toward the south where they always
congregate. Some were on the dikes, and some
on the water. There were several Tule
Herons near them and a number of
Paintail Ducks. On the middle salt
pools on our right (N.) were great
numbers of Gulls resting. There were
some Bonapartes but most of them were
Caleg. or Ring bills. I think there were as
many as 2000, many with their heads
under their wings. In the last pool there
were many Eared Grebes (100+) and a
number of Pintails. At the very end I
saw a group of 6 N. Philomachus. There
were occasional Willets and a few
Least Sandpipers in different places.
At Hut View Marsh the tide was too
far out for the best results but I
saw near the highway a number of Rb.
Clover and Kildeer, 7 Long-billed Curlew
and as many Hudsonian, many Willets;
one Lesser Yellowlegs which was very close
to a Willet and decidedly smaller than the
Willett (J.T.A.). Sixteen Dowitchers were
bunched together with their heads under
their wings; one Avocet was seen.
