Jan. 3, 4. Thile fogs in Berkeley. Spring song of
Vagón's Wren and Thrasher as well as Wren-tit,
and Titmouse.
Jan. 5. Heavy thile fog. As we were driving to
Boulder Creek we decided to go through
the new low-level Tunnel and down through
the San Ramon Valley but found the fog still
more dense there. It was not until we were
half way up the Saratoga Grade that we
drove out into clear sunshine. Weather at
San Boulder Creek was beautiful; air very clear,
air very warm, frost at night.
Jan. 6. Boulder Creek. Birds much more abundant
than at any time this winter - robins,
Horned Thrushes, Varied Thrushes; great flocks
of Siskiyou and juncos and Chickadees. Many
Towhees and Warblers. One Kingfisher heard.
Jan. 7. Birds haven't made an impression on the
madrone berries yet though some years they
are all eaten by Dec. 15. Worked in the
garden in the morning, transplanting seedlings -
After lunch we slept in the sunshine for
an hour (yesterday also) then started to Berkeley.
When we got to Saratoga Gap we could see the
whole valley filled with a high fog, more
rain tops only were clear. So we drove home
via the Skyline Blvd and Bay Bridge. Distance
the same as via Santa Clara, and time 2 3/4 hrs.
Cold in Berkeley with ground fog. During the night
the least wind began to blow.
