Aug21. Bounded Creek. I heard the note I
referred to on July 11 rain swept match
until the parent birds came to feed the
youngster. I found it was not a
thrush but a small bird the size of a
marbler or small flycatcher. I think I
know all the notes of the Western Flycatcher
as it has nested under our porch for years.
As I did not have my glasses on, the
glimpse I got was not sufficient for
identification. I heard the call notes of
the Calibrated Warbler, Cabanis(Hairy) Woodpecker,
Sunny Nuthatchers, Chickadees, Coast Jay,
Brown and Spotted Towhees and Juncoes. Saw a
large fery of quail. I saw two Martins above the house.
Aug. 22. Four of the "Lady Birds" were invited to have
lunch with Mrs. Willebrand in Palo Alto.
We left Berkeley at 9:30 and drove to Dinner-
Barton Bridge. As we turned from the Centerville
road into the Newark Road at the Salt Works
we noticed hundreds and hundreds of Swallows
perched on the wires. When we examined them
we found the flock to be composed of Barn Swallows
and Violet-green Swallows. A few had chestnut
rump patches so probably some Vine Cliff
Swallow but they were in the minority, only oc-
casionally one. Both Barn and V.g. were seen
on the ground where it was reddish gravel. When
we returned about 4 p.m. there were a few Barn
Swallows over the salt pools but the flock was
