Other birds heard: Coast jays - a family, young
seasong for food; Kingfisher - heard its rattle
as it flew over; Olive-sided Flycatcher,
peep-pip call heard frequently. Often seen
on the electric wire. Chickadees,
Creeper (heard once), Cassin Vireo (chee-chee-chee)
Warbling Vireo (sang a few trios), Spotted
Towhee, Brown Towhee, Grosbeak - Call not
heard and saw it several times as it
flew across the opening in front of the
cottage; Junco, Green-backed Goldfinch,
Many notes of young birds I did not have
time to identify.
July 13. Started home about 2:30 p.m. Stopped
at Mt. View Marsh with tide just going
out. I was astonished at the number
of birds; Hudsonian Curlew - I counted
19 in one bunch that crossed the highway
and many were still visible in the salt-
cowina. Many more were seen as we
continued northward - with stops every
few yards. Estimated more than 100
actually seen and probably many more
in the distance or hidden.
Long-billed Curlew - a few were cer-
tainly of this species as I saw the two
kinds close together for comparison. They
seemed less buffy than in the spring,
the sides of the head very light grey instead.
They gave the cur-lew call.
