1938. Alta.
Warbling Vireo (building a nest), Cassin Vireo, Lutescent,
Chickadee and yellow warblers. Titmouse, Rustic-
Cardinal Thrush, Western Tanager, Robin, Long-Tailed Chat,
Linnet, St. Goldfinch, Bk. Grosbeak, Chipping Sparrow,
Brown & Spotted Towhee, Lazuli Bunting, Song Sparrow
The Bleeder-billed Nut-hatch alighted in the
Roadway (macadam) to pick at droppings which
contained something stringy (for nest?)
Blackbirds attacked the Redtail and Sparrow
Nestles. The Proprietor of the Sunset
Nursery said a chat there began singing
every morning about five o'clock.
May 18. The jay's nest near the kitchen windows is finished.
May 19, 20. We visited Mrs. Jump at her 200
acre ranch at Alta, elevation 4000 ft.
It was early spring there; dogwood and
apple trees in bloom. I found Fox,
Sparrows and Hermit Warblers in full
song, apparently located for nesting Mrs.
Jump told me they have Mt. Druid and
Mt. Bluebirds nesting there usually—Chipping
Sparrow, Yellow Warbler, Black-headed
Grosbeak, Goldfinch, Junco,
Grosbeak, and Thrush were in the yard
all the time and I saw the White-headed
Woodpecker and heard the Screech Creeper.
Mrs. Jump told me that in March a flock
of Evening Grosbeaks came to their chimney—a
large stone chimney with large fireplaces outside
the line of the housewalls. A ledge in the
stone work made a convenient place for them
to alight.
