May 9. The Faculty Bird Section had its last field
trip to Contra Costa Ca Skies were overcast
and the wind cold. The first stop was at
Saranap Station where we found Bullock,
Orchids, Calif. Woodpeckers, Yellow Warblers,
Brewer Blackbirds, Brownning Doves, Western
Flycatchers, Linnets, etc. At Naberlands
Bee Ranch; Robins, Grosbeaks, Black Phoebe, House
Wren, Vigor Wren, Yellow Warblers, Spotted
and Brown Towhees, Bluebirds and
Linnets by the hundreds. All the trees are
filled with bird houses with openings on the
floor. Occasionally one is used by a wren
if the floor is large.. The Vigor Wren had
its nest under shrubbery which covered
a pipe about two feet from the ground
and young were calling loudly. A Goldfinch
was sitting in the nest we watched being built on Apr. 19.
We went out to the Sunset Nursery in
Alamo and on the banks of Walnut Creek
found a marvellous place for birds - there
we added Lazuli Buntings, Cassin Vireos,
Robins, Thrushes, Song Sparrows, Thrashers, Wood Peewees, A
Birchards and Lutescent Warblers & the Grouse's
Yellow Warblers, Linnets etc. Once I thought I
heard the notes of the Chat. One Grosbeak
had lost its voice and sang with very thin
notes.
At home again I found a field -pleas
maged W. Tanager just outside the kitchen
window. The Western Flycatcher is building
at the top of the drain pipe outside my room. They ganeup
at Mrs. Parsons house.
