May 2 - Showers. May 3. The first bird singing at dawn was a Dolinie Warbler. A little later the Lutescent Warbler and a Robin began and then the House Wren which always begins later than the others. About 6:45 a.m. I saw a Humming- bird take lichen from the oak tree near my window and a Tanager whistled and called. At 11 a.m. a Cassin Vireo was singing. Cloudy Female Allen Hummingbird buzzing about the oaks. May 4. Boulder Creek. Hermit Thrush sang continuously on the hillside across the river. Russet-backed Thrush in the garden. Bluebirds heard. Warblers: Lutescent, Paleolated, Yellow, Black-Throated Gray - Flycatchers; Western, [illegible]. May 5. Mt. Vico Marsh. Tide out too far for bird observations. Birds much less abundant: About 6 Bk. S. Clover, only one in full plumage. A few sandpipers; 30+ Hudsonian Curlews, 6 Godwits, a few Foster Terns. At Bembarton Bridge 1000s N. Phalaropes 1 Avocet, 1 Eared Grebe in full plumage. Nerved Lark on the fence, many Cliff Swallows, No pipits. A few sandpipers at west end. May 7. I walked to the head of Strawberry Canyon going up on the north-facing slope and returning by the road & the Botanical Gardens. Perfect May morning. All birds except Goldfinches apparently settled in nesting territories. A decided change in species as I left the north-facing
