May 2 - Showers.
May 3. The first bird singing at dawn was a
Dolinie Warbler. A little later the Lutescent
Warbler and a Robin began and then the
House Wren which always begins later than
the others. About 6:45 a.m. I saw a Humming-
bird take lichen from the oak tree near my window
and a Tanager whistled and called. At
11 a.m. a Cassin Vireo was singing. Cloudy
Female Allen Hummingbird buzzing about the oaks.
May 4. Boulder Creek. Hermit Thrush sang
continuously on the hillside across the river.
Russet-backed Thrush in the garden. Bluebirds
heard. Warblers: Lutescent, Paleolated, Yellow,
Black-Throated Gray - Flycatchers; Western,
[illegible].
May 5. Mt. Vico Marsh. Tide out too far for bird
observations. Birds much less abundant:
About 6 Bk. S. Clover, only one in full plumage.
A few sandpipers; 30+ Hudsonian Curlews,
6 Godwits, a few Foster Terns.
At Bembarton Bridge 1000s N. Phalaropes
1 Avocet, 1 Eared Grebe in full plumage.
Nerved Lark on the fence, many Cliff Swallows,
No pipits. A few sandpipers at west end.
May 7. I walked to the head of Strawberry Canyon
going up on the north-facing slope and
returning by the road & the Botanical Gardens.
Perfect May morning. All birds except Goldfinches
apparently settled in nesting territories. A decided
change in species as I left the north-facing
