The Barn Swallows were present in even
greater numbers than on July 31 and 25 to
50 of them alighted on the roadway in
front of us. I am quite sure they were
feeding on the salt pool flies. There were
100+ on the mud banks at the side of the
road, also. The young birds showed quite
a light rusty spot on the forehead. They
had some difficulty balancing themselves on
the roadway, also in walking a few steps.
Aug. 10. A Kingfisher flew past the house (Bertie).

White Pelicans 50-75; Farallon Cormorant 1;
Caspian Terns 20+; Forster's (perched on a
small island) - 56+
Willets 100-150; Avocets 200+; M. Phal. 1000+
Least Sandpipers 40+; Cliff Swallows 300+;
Barn Swallows 300+; Caley Gulls < .
Heard a Robin at Boulder Creek.
Aug. 13. Santa Cruz 4-4:30 p.m. " "
A great increase in miniature gulls,
esp. Western and Neewaunee. Mature Caley.
Gulls increasing. Patters 2; Black Tern 15+;
Sandpiper 100+; Brown Pelicans 50+.
No Guillemots or Cliff Swallows at Shellmont Pt.
Aug. 14. While we were eating breakfast on the
porch at Sempre Verde a Tanager gave its
"pre-tty" call several times; also its whistle.
No calls of Cooper Hawks and none
perched on the tree where they have been the
past two weeks. Birds very scarce.
