were very near the highway and just as
abundant as in November and December.

James blew the horn occasionally
and each time a flock of a hundred
flew out from the edge of the water just
under the highway.
Curlews. I saw more Long-tailed than
(Hudsonian. Perhaps 20 to 3.
Godwits were scattered on the edge of
deep water as far as > could see.
Willets - not outnumbering other
species as earlier in the winter.
Black-bellied Plover - single birds at
intervals - many calls heard.
Lesser Yellowlegs - three seen near road.
Avocets - no large flocks but single
birds in many places.
Killdeer - many - very noisy.
Ducks: Britails, Canvasbacks, a few
Clapper Rail - one about six ft. from the car.
Dumbarton Bridge:
West End - Rails, Willets, Clover Sandpipers
East End - Tars Grebes - 4 large groups, 300+
Shovelers 50-75. Shore birds resting
in salt pool. Too dark to identify.
Short-eared Owl on fence. Pipits
