a nest in ivy on Chemistry Bldg., and possibly one
Profess. Hammer near Stevens Union. Doug's Head;
Song Sparrow (4 or 5); Purple Finches, Titmouse, W. Fly
Hillou Vireo, Nuttall Sparrow. Other birds seen: [illegible]
Anna Hummingbird (2), Cally Jay (2), Robin, Hermit Thrush,
Brown-Backed Oriole, Pine Siskin.
At 8:30 a.m. at home I was surprised to hear the
√ Call of a Bullock's oriole. It remained perhaps five
minutes in the oaks east of the house, calling
and singing. Pileated Warblers were singing also.
April 9. Went with the "Earthworms" to visit some
gardens in San Francisco. Clear, crisp, sunny,
Light frost in the early morning on the dairy
bldgs., across the canyon. Pileated Warbler singing
constantly near my window. From the Berkeley Pier
we saw Bonaparte Gulls (30+), Farallone Cormorants,
V. Grebes, Band Grebes (some in full plumage), White-
winged and Surf Scoters, Pacific Loon. In Miss
Allyn's garden on Gough St.- Green St. there were
Chickadees, finches, an Aud. Warbler and Anna
Hummingbird. Lunch in Gap Tea Garden, Y.Y. Park. Mit-
tall Sparrow seems to have disappeared from the
garden; my Sparrows abundant. Anna & Allen Hummers
common. Our Stork-like Reddy Ducks were in full
plumage and a Redhead was seen; also a few Sword-billed
At 2 p.m. we visited the garden of Mrs. Jenkins near the old
Sullo's garden — a rock garden planted to succulents.
Saw there Anna Hummingbird, Black Phoebe; heard finches,
Nuttall and Song Sparrow.
