51 Buffleheads were seen. Many Eared (or Horned Grebes) were seen, also Bonaparte Gulls and a few Cormorants (Far). We were too late for the feeding at the fresh water pool and only a small number of Pintails and Baldpates were still about. Unless they were hidden on the island I would judge both far below usual number. The European Widgeon 3 was seen near Embark. No Mallards or Shovelers or Teal were seen. Mallard Sparrows heard singing - seemed not to be in flocks - In order of numbers I would say Canvasbacks were most numerous (500±), Bluebills (400±), Reddies (300±), Pintails (200±) Baldpates (150±) Bufflehead (30-40), Golden Eyes, (20±) mostly females - Only one goose was seen. Airplanes were demonstrating (Civilie Wright Day) and many were flying over the lake most of the time while we were there. In general the ducks seemed to pay no attention to them. Three geese (Canada) were flying very near the planes, high above the lake and disappeared toward the South. Dec.20. Started to Los Angeles. Went as far as Boulder Creek where we spent the night. Madrone berries gone. No frost. Wild flowers coming up everywhere, also seeds planted. Dec.21. Had valves ground on car; left B. at 2 p.m. and drove to Santa Maria, dinner at Paso Robles. County very green except where fields have been plowed. Stayed at Mary Hotel. Dec.22. Breakfast at Santa Maria Inn. Beautiful flowers in windows and on tables. Drove to L.A., lunch at Ventura. Weather fine: marina
