January.
Very little cold weather - no frosts
in our garden and very seldom any
frost across the canyon. Many spring-
life days.
The Anna Hummingbird has come con-
stantly to the Red-hot Poker Plants on the
street-line above the house and on Jan. 25
I saw one come to a test-tube feeder filled
with sugar-syrup which I had fastened
to the honey-dickle at the front door.
Hard barn owls calling several evenings 3rd week Jan.
Jan. 27. Dr. Grinnell brought his class to
watch birds through the windows.
Weather warm, clear. Section 1, 8:20-10 a.m.
Section 2, 10-11:40 a.m.
Birds came quite continuously.
Calif. Quail - a flock of about 21, one Laura-
Calif. Blue Jay - came repeatedly. Carries off
sunflower seeds, 8 or 10 at a time. Buried
most of them.
Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Brown Thrasher,
Juncoo came repeatedly for food. Titmouse too.
Robin, Varied Thrush, and Thrasher came to pool
for water and Unidentified and Spotted Towhee
were seen several times near the table.
The Upsetted Turkey comes at the table less
frequently than in past years. Golden-crowned
Sparrows were singing just above the pool
but were not seen. One hummingbird
buzzed near the table. Those on front row
said it showed rusty color.
