Oct.4. Wildcat Canyon: Fletcher group.
We followed the bottom of the canyon above the
reservoir. A Traill Flycatcher was seen and
watched closely for about 15 minutes. No
median line, yellowish under the tail. We
could not distinguish any eye-ring but it
was much too light underneath for a Wood
Beecher. Gambel, Golden-crowned and Purple-brown
Sparrows were seen; three Sh. Sh. Hawks
circling about when a flicker pounced in
a dead oak flew out at them. This happened
several times then the hawks rose in small
circles above the hills and disappeared. Very
few songs: Vigor's Wren, Wren-Tit and a few white-
crowns, one soft sweet-set call from titmouse.
Winter aggregations already in evidence.
On the way home I saw a R.c. Kitelet in
the Strettion's garden. Beautiful weather after first rain.
Oct.5, Audubon Warblers were calling near our
house.
Oct.6. Heavy fog but lasting only a few minutes above
the stadium (6:30-7:15a.m.) then light with breeze.
Oct.7-10- Hot, dry winds.
Oct.11- Wildcat Canyon- A large flock of Willow Goldfinch
at Spence St. Reservoir in grey winter plumage.
Dr. Griniell tells me they moult (body) twice a year while
Gld. Goldfinches moult only once and with bright
plumage in fall. Many flocks of Browned
Sparrows; everywhere Ducks. On the Campus
I saw a small flock (10?) of Cedar Waxwings.
Coster.
Oct.12 a.m. A House Wren heard off Wallows.
