Jan. 19. Went to Boulder Creek via Dunbarton Bridge
and Mt. View Marsh. Between Alvarado and
saw two large flocks of Savannah Sparrows (50+
and two flocks of Black-bellied Plover (30+ each) in
the fields; also a Duck Hawk. At the bridge on
the Salt pools about 300 Rared Grebes - scattered
instead of being all in the last pool on the right,
some were on the left where the wind was
less strong (north wind, clearing after rain). All three
kinds of Sandpipers were present - and in large
numbers but scattered - it was low tide. A
number of Black-bellied Plover, Willets and four
large tanny birds in the distance acted like
Godwits. There were a few ducks: pintails,
reddies, shorellers. No egrets, pelicans or avocet.
At Mt. View Marsh (tide low) there were many
shore birds: Sandpipers, Dowitchers (40+), Bb. Plover,
Willets, Hudsonian Curlew, Long-billed Curlew (6 feet)
and one Godwit and several Yellowlegs - two
of them decidedly smaller than the Willets
which were next to them. There were more
ducks in the marsh than at the bridge - but
probably not more than 100 within range from
the highway where we were parked.
Worked in the garden at Boulder Creek. Saw a flock
of about 200 Band-tailed Pigeons disappear over the
Summit of Ben Lomond about 4:30 p.m. Counted
eight flocks of Juncoes between Saratoga
and the cottage. Saw one Turkey Buzzard near
Saratoga. Weather was very cold as we
spent the night at Santa Cruz.
