111 March 31. Clear a.m.; partly cloudy p.m. N.W. wind. Odder in afternoon. Varied Thrushes, Robins, juncos, Siskins, Townsend Warblers, Audubon Warblers (in full plumage), White-crowned Sparrows, St. Nuttall Jays feeding on oak worms. Heard Pileated Warbler at end of Morawood Rd. April 1. Still cold. Birds still very abundant. Heard an Allen Hummingbird near Stadium - have been very scarce. Robins pick the worms up from the ground or take them from the trunks or branches of the trees rather than from the leaves. Apr. 2. Gave talk on Ornithology for Amateurs at Women's Faculty Club. Rain at night - Apr. 3. Rained hard all day. Apr. 4. Drove to Butah Creek. A flock of Willow Goldfinches was seen on the gravel surfaced road in Pleasants Valley. Butah Creek was very high, bridge under water. Went on to Vintners. Returned via Cordelia, Benicia, Valley. Saw 4 Am. Egrets, 1 Willet near Benicia. Cloudy a.m., windy near Bay. Clear p.m. April 5. Chilly north-west wind: Clear. Boulder Co. ? back April 6. Warm, clear. Lady Birds drove up hills back of Leona Heights - Saw Pheasants-crowned Sparrow and heard song: White-throated Swifts flew over us and across to "glory hole" of old quarry. At Miss Gra- Laves Riding Academy There were Chipping Sparrows, Gambel (?) and Golden-crowned Sparrows, but no House Wrens. Many Allen Hummingbirds seen. Saw one pair of Purple Finches in pines at Montelais. Female Allen H. carrying willow fluff -
