Steller jay.
Mar. 30. Cold in early morning. Warm in
middle of day. Saw Brewer Blackt.
Cliff Swallows (under eaves of barn next
wood yard. Watched Water Angel building
from 10:45-11:05. Came 8 times with
material most of which she placed
high at the back. One long rootlet
in bottom at center. Heard male
sing full song once, and a snatch
once.
Mar. 31. Colder. Water Angel still working at
nest. Perhaps half finished. Always
comes with building material to log
at foot of big boulder opposite nest,
waits a moment, then flies across
to nest. Saw her swim again.
Rattle like diminutive kingfisher's
rattle - shorter, not as loud.
Given by both male and female.
Male uses it as preface to song. Male
does not seem to help build nest
but stands on guard or nearby.
Took afternoon train & Boulder.
Seen a wounded Varied Thrush just
