managed to make things comparatively
comfortable before dark. Nine years since my
last camping trip in high Sierra.
July 9. Glorious day. Notes following birds.
Mt. Quail (heard), Red-s. Flicker, Night-hawk,
Calliope Hummer, Olive-backed Flycatcher, W.
Wood-pewee, Blue-fronted Jay, Cassin Purple
Finch, Green-backed Gull, Mt. White crowned
Sp., Chipping Sparrow, Sierra Junco, Thick-
tailed Fox Sp., W. Tanager, Tree Swallow, Warbling
Vireo, Cassin Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Audubon-
Warbler, Paleolated Warbler, Red-b. Nut-hatch,
Mt. Chickadee, Ruby-c. Kinglet, Rust-backed
Thrush, Western Robin (nest w. young in
cottonwood tree 8 ft. fr. ground). Total 25-
July 10. Brown Creeper (heard), Black-headed Grosbeak.
Found Wood Pewee's nest w. young (very young)
in Cottonwood tree 25 ft. up Parents brooding p.
Poor Will, called about 20 times w. short interval
after 2 or 25 calls.
