Lurid etc.
Went to Wiles Canyon for lunch. Saw Kingfisher,
House Wren with nest in hole in Sycamore Tree
feeding young-
May 17. Heard Tanagers during Commencement
exercises-
May 18. Jan and Nandy opened Wren's nest, left
lid up over an hour. 4 eggs-
May 19. Olive-sided Flycatcher, across Canyon-
calling all day.
Wrens still in box.
May 20. Went to Lake Merced. Saw Northern
Phalaropes - circled about like swallows
but alighted on water then flew up and
alighted again. Catching insects (?)
At Englewood one flew from land into
surf; flew over the highest breakers.
Saw following birds at Lake Merced and in woods:
cougat Englewood
Culls, Cal and 4, Lesser Scaup (one), Northern Phal.
