1965.
Italy.
Feb. 1 - May 18.
Saw hundreds of birds, small song
birds in markets but few in
the bushes.
May 7. Naples.
Took a long, beautiful walk
to Calmaldoli. Most beautiful
flowers and trees along much of
the way. As we walked home
in the late afternoon, nightingales,
dozens of them
were singing in a little canyon
filled with yellow broom and
alpine violets. I have heard
no bird song that will compare
with that of the nightingale in
variety, liquid beauty, emotional
quality or richness.
