For a summer trip we went by
May 27
train to Modesto intending to
buy there two donkeys. We
succeeded in finding only one
with the aid of Mr. Wm Crittenden.
James and I both started out
in the late afternoon but the
weather was so very hot that
I backed out. We walked about
four miles to a deserted ranch
house where we left our
pack and returned to Modesto
for the night.
We noticed great numbers of
Morning Doves and Crisles about
the deserted ranch house.
The next morning James started
out early by himself to make
the trip to Chinese Camp where I
