March 17 -
Arrived at nest of no 5 at
8:45. Birds first appeared at
8:05 when one bird sneaked out
along limbs coming from 3 side of
nest & the nest - the bill & head
were duffed into nest - a couple
of quick thrusts and then the
bird saw me as I was unfortunatly
close. It paused several seconds
- then worked on nest for 2 minutes
limbs - then at the top - then
joined by mate. A bottle washed
my fracture below judging to this.
The mate joined. The building bird
looked to be the lighter of the two
She left after two minutes down
stream & east. Other bird soon
showed a flicker out of the nest
Too. - disappeared under tree.
In about 2 min. came up well
soaked from bathing and flirted
and died. - furred yet.
Left by 8:15.
At 8:30 Durnet & nest - a wisp of
white car hair (body) 2" across 1/2
at structure was broke in bottom
of nest - evidently left their become
of my frame & would normally have
been worked in. A little had been
added to lining since yesterday
but not more than 3 or 4 loads at
