- Notes on Mammals-
In deer paddock; saw young fawn. Spotted coat of young fawn noted - probably serves to break up the outline of the creature and in a proper setting serve to hide it from its enemies. - In the moose paddock, a bull moose, several cows and a young calf were observed. The horns of the bull were in the "velvet." The horns of all the cervidae are lost or cast annually and new ones grown. Each new set of antlers is larger and more complex than the preceding. The young moose is provided with stilt-like legs by means of which it may escape from pursuing enemies.
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a form which is found from Vancouver northward to Alaska. This species sometimes exceeds the grizzly in size.
