6 Grey-backed Tern Two of this species were observed flying toward Moku Manu, where a small breeding colony is established. Sooty Tern This species increased 91% in numbers, from 1633 to 3117. As in past months concentrations of this species occurred near Oahu and in the southern portion of the grid area. On several occasions immature birds were observed in the company of adults, both in the north and south, since the immatures of Moku Manu, off Oahu are now all flying, in addition to the immatures of the southern populations. Noddy Tern This species increased 81% from 165 to 304. All of these were seen within 50 miles of Oahu or Maui. In feeding flocks to the north of Oahu they were in the proportion of one Noddy for every three Sooty Terns. Hawaiian Noddy Tern Seven of this species were seen in May, five within sight of Maui and two within sight of Oahu. Fairy Tern Seven of this species were seen in the grid area in May. The species was absent from the area in April. Five were seen in the southern portion of the grid and two were seen just north of Oahu.
