SPECIES ACCOUNT
Black-footed Albatross
Numbers of this species dropped 46% from 37 in April to 20 in May.
This decline in numbers was accompanied by a northward trend in distribution.
The southern limit of the range of this species seems to coincide with the
convergence area between the North Pacific Central Water and the California
Current Extension. One of this species was banded and released on 14 June
64.
Wedgetailed Shearwater
Numbers of this species rose from 352 in April to 1637 in May, an
increase of 365%. Dark phase birds predominated south of 13°N this cruise,
indicating a northward extension of the feeding grounds for the southern
populations. In feeding flocks around Oahu, there were proportionately
fewer Wedgetails than previous months, due probably to the beginning of
egg laying in main Hawaiian Island colonies.
Sooty Shearwater
The last of 14 Sooty Shearwaters seen this month passed northwest
on 27 May. Between 18 March and 27 May 1967 of this species were observed,
all heading approximately northwest. Peak numbers were observed 3 April
when 1337 were seen.
Christmas Island Shearwater
Two of this species were seen in the grid area this month, one north
of Oahu and the other toward the southern end of the grid.
